PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Mercer sophomore Trey Rule shot an even-par 72 to move into the top ten individuals on the second day of the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational at the Sawgrass County Club. As a team, Mercer's Monday total of 298 places the team 13th entering Tuesday's final round.
"Trey played solid through weather issues and some delays," Mercer head coach Steve Bradley said. "Hans and James finished off their rounds nice and we played the final three holes at seven under, which is a much better finish that yesterday."
Rule's 72 came on the heels of a 71 on Monday to place him in a three-way tie for ninth place with North Texas' Rodolfo Cazaubon and Arkansas' Sebastian Cappelen. North Florida's senior duo of Kevin Phelan and Sean Dale are in first and second, respectively with 36-hole totals of 131 and 135.
The Ospreys lead the field with a team score of 559, while Duke is second at 571 and UCF is third at 585. Arkansas, North Texas, Florida and LSU are all tied for fourth place with scores of 587.
Mercer sophomore Hans Reimers carded a 76 and is tied for 50th with a two-day total of 151. Senior John Gregory Joseph shot 77 after his opening round 76 and is tied for 59th. Sophomore James Beale improved upon his day one score by nine strokes, shooting 73 to move into a tie for 67th. Senior Thomas Holmes rounded out Mercer's competitors with a 78 and is tied for 73rd at 157.
"It was a better finish today, but it still feels like we're wasting some shots out there," Bradley said. "I'm not sure what the weather will be like tomorrow, but if we're able to go out we need to play hard and finish strong."
The final round of the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational is slated to begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
