EATONTON, Ga. – The Mercer men's golf team took a sixth place finish in the Linger Longer Invitational after Sunday's final round was cancelled to due rainfall at the Great Waters Golf Course. Senior John Gregory Joseph and sophomore Trey Rule each took home ties for 17th place as Mercer's top finishers in the event.
Alabama captured the Linger Longer team title for the third-straight season with a 36-hole score of 560. Kennesaw State (576) placed second while Oklahoma State (577), Georgia Tech (579) and Georgia (582) rounded out the top five.
"It was a little tricky because everyone had four of five holes to play today and there was a lot to be decided," Mercer head coach Steve Bradley said. "For us to finish sixth in this field is encouraging. We got off to a really bad start in the first round, but for us to finish well showed a lot of guts."
Mercer came in at 589, outpacing eight teams after posting scores of 298 and 291. The tournament placement marked the sixth time in the last eight tournaments that the Bears have finished sixth or better.
Rule and Joseph both finished with 36-hole totals of 144 to outplay 63 other participants. Trey's tournament featured rounds of 73 and 71 while Joseph had rounds of 70 and 74.
Junior Hans Reimers tied for 36th at 149 (77-72) and junior James Beale tied for 50th at 152 (78-74). Freshman Jeffrey Heinicka tied for 54th at 153 (78-75) while senior Thomas Holmes competed as an individual and tied for 59th at 154 (73-81).
Mercer returns to action with its final tune-up before the conference championship at the Irish Creek Collegiate, co-hosted by Charlotte and Davidson. The event will be contested on April 6 and 7 at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, N.C.
