MACON, Ga. – Mercer junior shortstop Krista Kennedy picked up her first career Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week honors on Monday after an outstanding week at the plate that helped propel the Bears to a 3-1 record in conference play.
The Marietta native helped improve the Bears overall mark in the A-Sun to 9-3 by registering 10 RBI and two homeruns, including her second grand slam of the season in yesterday's 12-4 win at Stetson. Kennedy batted .538 on the week and had at least one hit in each of the four games including two multi-hit games.
She currently ranks second in the conference with 42 RBI and is third in both homeruns (9) and total bases (70). Through 35 games this season, Kennedy has already put together a career year by posting 34 hits, seven doubles, one triple, nine homeruns and 42 RBI.
Kennedy's work at the dish is a good representation of how the Bears offense has improved this season. Mercer currently ranks second in the A-Sun with a .307 overall and is first in hits (291), and runs scored (198) and tied for first in homeruns (31).
Through 35 games, the Bears have bumped their overall team batting average up 22 points from .275 to .307, posted 36 more hits and have scored 10 more runs than they did at this same point last year.
Mercer takes a short break from conference play to host Florida A&M for a midweek matchup at Sikes Field this Wednesday before hosting Jacksonville for a three-game set this Friday and Saturday.
