DADE CITY, Fla. – Mercer junior Hans Reimers led the Mercer men's golf team on Monday at the USF Invitational at the Lake Jovita Country Club, firing a 70 (-2) to help the Bears finish the day in fifth place on the team leaderboard. Mercer's two-day total of 587 has the Bears two strokes ahead of Virginia and five strokes behind Kentucky.
North Carolina State leads the event with a 36-hole total of 567, while South Carolina (570) and Florida State (579) rank second and third. Mercer's 298 on Monday was nine strokes off the team's day one total.
Reimers' 70 came on the heels of a 73, tying him for for eighth place on the individual leaderboard. Senior John Gregory Joseph followed Sunday's 69 with a 75 and is tied for 10th place overall.
"We played average today and its disappointing because the conditions were better," Mercer head coach Steve Bradley said. "Hans was pretty solid, both him and John Gregory have a chance at pretty high finishes. There are some good teams here with good scores, and we'll have to play well to move into the top three. That will be our goal tomorrow."
Sophomore Trey Rule is tied for 37th after posting a 77 in the second round. Junior James Beale also shot 77 on Tuesday and is tied for 48th place. Freshman Jeffrey Heinicka collected his second-straight round of 76 and is tied for 52nd place.
The final round of the USF Invitational is slated to begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
