MACON, Ga. – Just a month after hiring co-head coach Stephanie DeFeo, Mercer softball head coach James DeFeo has added another key part to his coaching staff with the hiring of Kim Mazzapica.
Mazzapica, a four-year letterwinner for the Ball State softball team, was named an assistant coach for Mercer softball on August 1, 2013. Mazzapica comes to Mercer after completing her first season as a volunteer assistant coach for Ball State University, where she helped the Ball State pitching staff rank fourth in the Mid-American Conference with a combined 2.74 earned run average and a 37-17 overall record during the 2013 season. Her experience as a pitcher helped Mazzapica lead the program to their fourth MAC regular season title in five years.
"Mazzapica is an outstanding addition to the Mercer Softball Staff," said head coach James DeFeo. "Her expertise in pitching will elevate our staff to the top of the Atlantic Sun Conference."
Under Mazzapica's mentorship, Ball State freshman Nicole Steinbach became the program's first MAC Freshman of the Year while also earning recognition on the All-MAC second team and MAC All-Freshman team. Steinbach finished the 2013 season with a 14-9 record and ranked fifth in the MAC with a 2.28 ERA, while her six shutouts ranked second in the conference. Read more about Coach Mazzapica here.
The Mercer softball team kicks off their fall schedule on October 5th at Sikes Fields with a double header against Georgia College at 1 pm.
