WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Mercer men's tennis team played another ranked opponent tough before dropping a 6-1 decision to No. 48 ranked UNC Wilmington on Saturday afternoon at the UNCW Courts.
Mercer (3-9) has lost six of its nine matches thus far in 2014 to ranked opponents with the most recent defeat coming on the road at the hands of the 48th-ranked Seahawks.
"The conditions were very tough today and I think we handled it pretty well," said seventh-year UNCW Head Coach Mait DuBois. "We played a very decisive doubles point and won the first set on all six of the singles courts. I was very impressed with Mercer and how well they competed. They got better as the match went on and we did well to take five of the six singles. They have an excellent coach and I know that their program will continue to improve."
The Seahawks opened the match by capturing the doubles point with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
UNCW then proceeded to win the match by securing points at No. 2 singles, No. 1 singles and No. 4 singles.
Mercer secured its lone point in the match when sophomore Arnav Mohanty gutted out a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles of UNCW's Pedro Mol.
Mercer is back in action when it takes on Big South member Campbell in Savannah, Ga. on March 1.
