Fears Claims Individual Medalist Honors in Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Mercer senior Lacey Fears claimed individual medalist honors at the 3M Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate on Saturday, finishing ahead of 74 other competitors on the strength of a second round 2-under 70. As a team, Mercer's tournament total of 906 placed the Bears second of 14 teams at Forest Hills Golf Club.
In Saturday's second and third rounds, Mercer shot 288 and 306, respectively as a team. The Bears finished 10 strokes behind Vanderbilt for the team title and four strokes ahead of third-placed Kansas.
Fears opened Saturday's play with a 70 and completed her showing with a 74 in the second round of the day. Those scores came on the heels of a Friday 73 and positioned her four strokes ahead of the nearest competitor.
Fears now boasts six career tournament wins and has finished inside the top-10 in four events this season.
Senior Mary Alice Murphy rebounded from an 80 in Friday's opening rounds with scores of 73 and 77 on Saturday. Her three-round total of 230 placed her in a tie for 19th individually.
Freshman Katy Harris notched Mercer's low score of the event Saturday, shooting 3-under 69 in the second round before shooting 83 in the third round. Her tournament total of 231 placed her in a tie for 23rd.
Junior Sarah Louie Brown finished in 33rd place after shooting 79 and 75 on Saturday. Brown's Saturday scores closed her showing a 234. Freshman Marin Hanna rounded out Mercer's competitors with a tie for 53rd at 242. Hanna shot 76 and 70 on Saturday after using 86 strokes in Friday's first round.
Mercer's second place finish established the team's fifth top-five finish of the season. The Bears continue the spring season at the John Kirk Panther Collegiate, hosted by Georgia State on March 30-31.
