CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Mercer senior Lacey Fears shot 3-over 74 in Wednesday's final round of the Hurricane Invitational , leading the women's golf team to a seventh place finish in the team standings. Fears' three-round total of 218 positioned her in a tie for 16th place individually.
Mercer collected a team score of 303 on Wednesday, combining with opening rounds of 291 and 294 to finish two strokes ahead of South Florida. The Bears were just six shots behind East Carolina for sixth place, while Northwestern won the title with a tournament total of 864.
"Today, we didn't execute like we are able," Mercer head coach Gary Guyer said. "We were in position to win and just didn't take advantage of it. If we keep putting ourselves in position to win, then good things will happen. We gained a lot of valuable experience today."
Fears' Tuesday 74 came on the heels of back-to-back 72's and established the fifth top-20 placement of her senior season. In 56 holes of action, Fears posted 38 pars.
Junior Sarah Louie Brown closed her showing at the event with a 79 on Wednesday and tied for 22nd place overall. Freshman Haley Austin tied for 35th individually at 224 after using 73 strokes on Wednesday.
Freshman Marin Hanna closed with an 81 in the final round and tied for 60th place, while senior Mary Alice Murphy rounded out Mercer's competitors with a tie for 74th. Murphy carded her second-straight 77 on Wednesday and used 234 strokes over three days.
Mercer returns to action at the Insperity Lady Jaguar on March 14. The three-day event is hosted by Augusta State at the Forest Hill Golf Course in Augusta, Ga.
