NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Holding a one game advantage in the loss column on them, the Mercer University softball team travels to Lipscomb University for three Atlantic Sun games this weekend at Smith Stadium.
Mercer (29-14, 11-5 A-Sun) will look to stop a miniature three-game skid as they get on the road to Lipscomb (31-9, 11-6 A-Sun). Meanwhile, the Bison are on a three-game win streak.
The Bears will look to its top three hitters for some production this weekend. Senior McKenzie Woody, the usual lead-off hitter, leads the team in batting average with a .359 clip. Sophomore Kaytlin Haney, typically the second hitter in the lineup, leads the team in RBIs with 45. Freshman Caroline Taylor, batting in the three-hole as of late, leads the team in home runs at 13.
Those three will be the ones to watch as Mercer looks to boost their productivity in the run department this weekend.
Lipscomb, this year, has scored the second most runs in the conference (behind Mercer's 256) at 243. Their offense, more than anything, has led them to their 31 wins.
Kelsey Cartwright bats a solid .349 and is the team-leader in extra-base hits with 16, which includes seven home runs, and has 33 RBIs. Kristen Sturdivant is also a driller as she leads the team in homers (8) and RBIs (36). Those two have given opposing pitchers something to think about in the circle all year long.
The three games will go a long way toward shaping the A-Sun Conference Championship seeding. With just two more weeks left in their conference slate, Mercer sits at third, with Lipscomb in fourth, only one loss separating them.
The series will begin with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and will conclude with a third game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
