NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Under a partly cloudy sky with 80 degree temperatures, the Mercer University softball team lost two games to the Lipscomb University softball team at Draper Diamond at Smith Stadium on Saturday
Mercer (29-15, 11-6 Atlantic Sun) was run-ruled in game one by Lipscomb (32-9, 12-6 A-Sun) by a score of 9-1 and then lost in extra innings in game two 5-4. The losses flip-flopped Lipscomb and Mercer in the standings, putting Lipscomb ahead.
The Bears had a tough go of it in the first game as they lost to the Bison 9-1 in five innings. Lipscomb's hitters got their nine runs on eight hits.
Other than reaching on four errors, Mercer managed only two hits. Freshman Caroline Taylor and senior Krista Kennedy both recorded singles, with Kennedy getting the Bears' lone RBI. Sophomore Kaytlin Haney scored Mercer's only run.
Senior Julia Rice (8-4) had a rough start in this game and took the loss. Ashley Henderson (16-2) recorded the win for Lipscomb.
Game two showed more promise for the Bears, but ultimately ended with a 5-4 loss in eight innings.
Senior Krista Kennedy hit a two-run home run in the first inning, her eighth of the year, and Haney had a 2-run single, but they weren't enough as Lipscomb overcame some stellar defense from Mercer in the win.
Freshman Kirsten Stevens got the start and handled the Bison lineup well enough, but allowed the game-tying run in the bottom of the 7th. Junior Riley Carter (5-2) came in to relieve her in the seventh, but Lipscomb scored the game winning run off of her in the next inning.
Mercer will finish the series with Lipscomb on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
