NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After a tough weekend, the Mercer University softball team lost the series finale to Lipscomb University by the score of 2-1 at Draper Diamond at Smith Stadium on Sunday.
Mercer (29-17, 11-8 Atlantic Sun) was beaten by an extra-inning walk-off hit for the second game in a row. The loss extends the Bears slide to six straight, their longest such streak of the season.
Freshman Kirsten Stevens pitched a brilliant game, allowing just four hits and three walks while fanning three, but couldn't get the run support needed to win. Fellow freshman Anna O'Neill (5-6) took the loss after coming in to relieve Stevens in the sixth inning.
Freshman Korissa Aguilar scored the Bears lone run after pinch-running for sophomore Natalie Shiver, who reached on an error to lead-off the fifth inning. Aguilar scored on a single by junior Kaylynn Sloat.
The Bears played stellar defense to preserve the one-run lead throughout the game, up until Lipscomb tied it in the fifth. They turned two double plays, the first of which came with two on and one out in the second.
Mercer will have the middle of the week off as their next game does not happen until Friday when they start their three-game series with Northern Kentucky. The Bears will host the Norse starting with a doubleheader at 4:00 p.m. on Friday and the finale at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
