MACON, Ga. – Junior Kaylynn Sloat and Freshman Kirsten Stevens put a cherry on top of the 2014 season as both took home weekly conference awards for the Mercer University softball team as chosen by the league office on Monday.
Sloat was named Atlantic Sun player of the week and Stevens was named A-Sun pitcher of the week, both the first of their careers and both the first awards for Mercer this year. Both players were instrumental in the series sweep of Florida Gulf Coast this past weekend in Fort Myers, Fla.
Sloat put together an impressive weekend as she tallied four hits in seven at-bats including two doubles and a home run. She also scored four runs and knocked in three. She was a constant presence on the base paths as she had a .667 on-base percentage. The ball was obliterated off her bat numerous times, as evidence of a 1.286 slugging percentage.
The FGCU scoreboard still has a spot where her homer slammed into it.
Sloat boosted her season totals with her weekend performance as she now sports a .323 batting average to go along with a .428 on-base percentage and a .624 slugging percentage. She also has 21 total extra-base hits.
Stevens absolutely controlled the Florida Gulf Coast lineup in her two starts which is why she is the A-Sun pitcher of the week. She pitched two complete games (14 innings) and gave up just one run in each game. All total, nine hitters reached base against her while eight of them struck out. The eagles only managed two extra-base hits on her, as well.
Stevens made her already tiny season ERA microscopic. She now has a 1.96 ERA to go along with an opposing batting average of .221. She has fanned 93 total batters this year compared to just 26 walks. She will be in the hunt for A-Sun pitcher of the year after a truly inspiring freshman campaign.
Sloat and Stevens will travel with their teammates to the A-Sun tournament next week after a bit of downtime this week for final exams.
