MACON, Ga. – After winning two games in a mid-week doubleheader last week against them, the Mercer University softball team will travel to Kennesaw State for a game on Wednesday at Bailey Park to finish out the season series.
Mercer (29-13, 11-4 Atlantic Sun) used two walk-off hits last Wednesday to take both games in a doubleheader in Macon against Kennesaw State (19-21, 8-9 A-Sun). Now they travel to the Owls for the third game of the series.
Senior McKenzie Woody will look to keep up the momentum she built last week. The speedy centerfielder compiled a .474 batting average and stole her 20th bag of the season before being named Mercer Female Athlete of the Year on Sunday. With that good week, Woody's season batting average has jumped to .363.
The Owls stopped a six-game losing streak with a win at Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday. After having been victimized by late-game rallies and walk-offs lately, Kennesaw received some late inning magic from second baseman Carly Van Auken when she hit the eventual winning two-run homer in the top of the seventh to beat Gulf Coast 2-1.
Amanda Henderson pitched a stellar game for the Owls, allowing six hits and a run while striking out six in a complete game win. She has 15 wins on the season.
Both teams will be looking to win this game to help solidify their positions in the A-Sun tournament. Currently, Mercer sits in third place, two losses up on Lipscomb, while Kennesaw State sits in fifth, two wins above Florida Gulf Coast. Only the top six make the tournament.
Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. with a forecast of mostly sunny and 66 degrees. Live Stats will be provided and you can get up-to the minute news and analysis by following @MercerUSoftball on Twitter.
