NASHVILLE, Tenn. – In an effort to beat the rain, the Mercer University softball team will play their Atlantic Sun Semi-Final game against Stetson University at 10:00 a.m. central time at Draper Diamond at Smith Stadium on Friday.
No. 4 Mercer (36-17) split their season series with No. 3 Stetson (36-12) in Macon before rain cancelled the third game of the series. The two schools have met 10 times in the tournament with Stetson getting nine wins.
The series with the Hatters was a confusing one to analyze for the Bears. Stetson took game one 6-1 despite being out-hit 10-9 by Mercer. Nine runners were stranded, though, for Mercer, which is the same amount of strikeouts that pitcher Meredith Owen, of Stetson, had on the Mercer lineup.
Also, game one saw an uncharacteristic performance from freshman Kirsten Stevens as the Hatters touched her up for five runs.
Game two saw Mercer win in dramatic fashion as sophomore Kaytlin Haney hit a walk-off single in the eighth inning to give Mercer a 5-4 win. Junior Kaylynn Sloat hit a home run in this game and the Bears handed Owen her third loss of the season.
It will surely be Owen in the circle for the Hatters on Friday and Mercer has hit her well in the two times they've seen her. 14 hits in 10+ innings is nothing to shake a stick at, they just need to get that timely hit to knock in the base runner.
With inclement weather expected, the A-Sun moved the original start time from 12:30 p.m. to 10:00 a.m. central time. If you cannot be at Draper Diamond, follow on Twitter @MercerUSoftball.
