MACON, Ga.- Last week, members of the Mercer softball team took time out of their busy schedules to visit Macon's Appling Middle School to work with youth softball players. Eight Mercer players participated in the helping the girls, many of which are new to the game, work on developing their skills for their upcoming season.
Mercer's student-athletes broke the 11-to-14 year-old pupils into different groups to focus on motor skills training and strategic instruction. Over two days, the group worked extensively to help prepare the team for their upcoming season.
Phys. Ed. Instructor and Assistant Softball Coach Lisa Hayes spoke very highly of the Mercer players. "They were willing to help so much, and I was very impressed with them," said Hayes.
Hayes was also very encouraged by the continued relationship the Mercer student-athletes have had with the girls. A collection of Mercer's softball players plan to attend Appling's first game of the season on Sept. 8, and have hopes of having the Appling players attend some of their home games once the season begins.
