
Men's Soccer Picks Up 2-1 Win Over VMI on Senior Day

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer University men's soccer team defeated VMI, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon.
TURNING POINT
 After a scoreless first half, Jordan Duru gave Mercer a 1-0 lead in the 47th minute with a shot from just outside the goal off a long serve from Mark Riggins. The Bears went up 2-0 in the 52nd minute when a VMI defender knocked the ball in the net while trying to block a serve. The Keydets scored a goal of their own in the 76th minute with a header off a free kick to make it 2-1, and Mercer held VMI off in the final minutes to emerge victorious.
MAN OF THE MATCH
 Jordan Duru scored Mercer's first goal of the match and also led the Bears with four shots and two shots on goal. 
STAT OF THE GAME
 Mercer led VMI in shots, 19-5, including 11-1 in the first half.
NOTABLES
- Jordan Duru scored his fourth goal of the season and the seventh of his career.
 - Mark Riggins dished out his first assist of the season as well as the first of his career.
 - Jourdan Gooden also tallied four shots, including one on goal, while Max Poore and Will Bagrou registered three shots each.
 - David Murtaugh recorded a pair of shots, and Emmet Johnson, Kobe Perez and Drew Schall all fired off a shot apiece.
 - Jeremy Booth made three saves and allowed just one goal while between the posts for the Bears.
 - Mercer held an 8-4 shots on goal advantage. The Bears also led the Keydets in corner kicks, 8-0.
 - Mercer has now won five of its last six Senior Day matches.
 
RECORDS UPDATE
 Mercer improves to 9-6-1 (4-3-1 SoCon), while VMI drops to 0-16 (0-8 SoCon).
UP NEXT
 Mercer will play its final home game of the season on Tuesday, Oct. 27 when it hosts ETSU at 7:00 p.m.
