MERCER SPOTLIGHT
Ren got his tournament off to a good start and will head into tomorrow's final round in position for his second Top-10 finish of the year. The sophomore ranked among the event's leaders with eight birdies through the first round including four on first nine holes of his 3-under-par second round.
HOLE OF THE DAY
Smothers had Mercer's hole of the day, sinking an eagle on No. 18. The junior worked around several hazards on the 570-yard par-5 to wrap up his first nine holes of the second with a 3-under tally. He finished the day with a 9-over total of 153.
THE BEARS IN THE TEAM STANDINGS
Mercer showed an 11-stroke improvement in the second round, finishing with a 6-over 294 to close the opening day in 13th place. The Bears head into the final 18 holes of play just six shots away from moving into the Top 10. No. 20 Purdue owns four-stroke lead over second-place North Carolina (No. 18), while Northwestern rounds out the top three.
COACH KAYDEN'S TAKE
"I saw a lot of fight from the guys which is good, but we are not quite consistent enough throughout the entire 18 holes to get the scores we need. We need to look at our course management and decision making. However, we improved from Round 1 by 11 shots, so that is a good positive to build on. It was also good to see Jerry playing well in the final tournament of the fall. He was taking care of the small things and hopefully he can close with his best finish in the last three weeks leading into offseason."
MERCER NOTABLES
- Mercer has 28 birdies so far in the tournament, led by a team-best eight birdies from Ren. Heinicka finished with seven for the Bears, while Smothers and Bogdanovich had six and five respectively.
- Ren was at his best on par-5 holes, finishing 3-under in those situations with an average score of 4.63. He was also below par on par-3 holes, finishing 2-under on the day with an average of 2.75. Bogdanovich was close behind in par-3 scenarios, averaging 2.88 strokes on those holes.
- Bogdanovich had the best round of his career, carding a 1-over 73 on Sunday's final round.
COMING UP
The Bears wrap up the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate tomorrow morning, as they kick off the third round with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
