AUBURN, Ala. – A big first inning for Auburn was enough to lift the Tigers to a 7-3 win over the Mercer University softball team on Thursday in the opening game of the Tiger Invitational.
Auburn (7-0) was able to jump out to an early lead off of a five hit, seven run inning to start off the game. Mercer (4-2) settled down heading into the third, adding one run off of a pair of hits from Emma Andrew and Taylor Miller.
The Bears loaded the bases in the fourth and were able to come away with two runs as Shayla Kicklighter advanced home on a hit by pitch and an Andrew RBI single up the left side scored Natalie Shiver. Kirsten Stevens threw six scoreless innings to close out the game as she moves to 2-1 on the year.
Mercer will return to action tomorrow on day two of the Tiger Invitational, as the Bears take on Eastern Illinois at 3:30 p.m. EST.
