2016 MEN'S SOCCER SOCON TOURNAMENT BRACKET
MACON, Ga. – ETSU's Joao Ramalho netted a game-winning goal in the 87th minute to stun Mercer, 3-2, and claim the Southern Conference regular season championship at Bear Field on Saturday night.
The Bears entered the match in first place and needed at least a draw to clinch the regular season title, but ETSU instead leapfrogged them in the conference standings to finish the year with 23 points.
Despite the loss, Mercer (12-6-0, 7-3-0 SoCon) earns the No. 2 seed in the SoCon Tournament as well as a first-round bye with 21 points. The Bears have an automatic berth into the semifinal round and will not play again until 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 10 in Greensboro, North Carolina. They'll face the winner of No. 6 VMI at No. 3 Wofford, who play at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5 in the quarterfinals round.
Ramalho's game-winner came only 11 minutes after he tied the match, 2-2, off of an assist from Cameron Woodfin. Mercer held two leads in the match, the latest of which came Jordan Duru put the Bears ahead 2-1 in the 55th minute with his fourth goal of the year.
The Buccaneers (11-4-2, 7-1-2) – who earned the No. 1 seed in the upcoming tournament and will have a first-round bye as well – completed a 2-0 sweep of Mercer in regular season play this season with the win. They'll face the winner of No. 5 Furman and No. 4 UNCG at 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 10 in Greensboro.
STAT OF THE MATCH
Mercer allowed three goals against the Bucs, the most goalkeeper Jeremy Booth and the Bears' defensive line have surrendered this season. Booth entered the match with the second-best goals against average in the SoCon (1.00).
MAN OF THE MATCH
Jordan Duru's score in the 55th minute appeared as if it would be the eventual game-winner before the Bucs stormed back in the final 14 minutes. It was one of two shots by Duru in the match. The senior midfielder and captain now has four goals on the year, tied for the second-most of any Bear.
HOW IT HAPPENED
It took all of nearly two and a half minutes for senior defender Ian Antley to put the Bears ahead 1-0 with a beautiful shot off the right post. Antley received a pass near midfield and with room to work, dribbled up to the top of the box before firing what would become his first goal of the season.
ETSU drew even in the 31st minute as Fletcher Ekern – who owns eight of the Bucs' 18 goals in the past seven matches – corralled a rebounded shot by Cameron Woodfin and put a shot past Mercer goalkeeper Jeremy Booth.
The Bears outshot ETSU 9-5 in the opening half. Each team received a yellow card as well; ETSU's Joe Pickering in the 19th and Mercer's Trenton Whitely in the 36th.
The match became heated in the 51st minute when Will Bagrou drew a yellow card for colliding with ETSU goalkeeper Jonny Sutherland. Sutherland was removed from the match due to injury and replaced by Daniel Adelman in goal.
Less than five minutes later, Duru put the Bears up 2-1 off of a free kick by Trenton Whitely about 15 yards outside of the box. An ETSU defender tried to clear the ball out following Whitely's chip into the box, but it instead ricocheted directly to Duru who found the net. ETSU would go on to win the match behind Ramalho's pair of goals in the final 14 minutes.
