Women’s Basketball Hosts Campbell on Wednesday

MACON, Ga. – Mercer returns to Macon to host Campbell in a midweek matchup. The Bears and the Camels are set to tip off at 7 p.m. in Hawkins Arena on Wednesday.

NO SOPHOMORE SLUMP FOR CALLOWAY
KeKe Calloway finished her freshman season as one of Mercer's leading scorers in the SoCon Tournament. The guard has started her sophomore season in much of the same fashion as she has led the Bears in scoring in both games. Calloway even scored a career-high 24 points against Georgia on Sunday. With 20.5 points per game, she is ranked fourth in the SoCon and 87th nationally.
KEKE FOR THREE!
In addition to leading Mercer in points per game, Calloway has nit a team-leading six three-pointers so far this season. The sophomore is ranked second in the SoCon and 43rd nationally in three-pointers made. She also ranks first in the conference and 32nd nationally in attempts.
OUTSTANDING OFFENSE
In just two games this season, Mercer has proved that it will continue to put on a show on offense. The Bears are leading the SoCon in scoring offense (74.0), field goal percentage (.450), three-point field goal percentage (.435), assists (33) and assists per game (16.5). Mercer is also ranked 36th nationally in three-point field goal percentage and 50th in total assists.
WILLIAMS IN THE STARTING LINEUP
Alex Williams, who was a solid player off the bench for Mercer last season, has started both games so far this year. The junior is averaging 8.5 points per game and 2.5 rebounds per game. Additionally, she leads the SoCon in both blocked shots (4) and blocks per game (2.0). Williams also ranks 52nd nationally in blocked shots and 91st in blocks per game.
MERCER PICKED SECOND IN SOCON PRESEASON POLLS
After shocking the Southern Conference last season and winning a share of the regular season title, Mercer has been picked to finish second in the conference for the 2016-17 campaign. Additionally, Kahlia Lawrence and Sydni Means were named to the Preseason All-Conference Team.
The Bears tallied three first place votes and were just two votes behind the Mocs in the coaches poll. Chattanooga was voted first in both the coaches and the media polls, just narrowly edging Mercer in both.
Lawrence led Mercer in 2015-16 and finished the season ranked second in the SoCon with 18.0 points per game. In just two seasons, she has scored over 1,000 career points and currently ranks 20th on Mercer's all-time scoring leaderboard. Lawrence also averaged 5.5 rebounds per game and added 71 assists, 48 steals and 10 blocks on the year.
Last season, Means blossomed as the Bears' starting point guard, finishing the season with 189 assist, 5.7 assists per game and a 2.91 assist/turnover ratio. Nationally, Means ranked sixth in assist/turnover ratio, 20th in total assists and 23rd in assists per game. She also led Mercer and the SoCon in steals (80) and was second in the SoCon with a 79.0 free throw percentage after going 90-of-124 from the charity stripe.
BEARS RANKED NO. 23 IN MID-MAJOR PRESEASON POLL
The Bears were voted No. 23 in the CollegeInsider.com Women's Mid-Major Top 25 Preseason Poll.
Mercer joins No. 4 Chattanooga as the only two SoCon teams to be ranked in the preseason poll, which is made up of head coaches from 31 mid-major programs. Only 14 points separates the Bears from the Top 20.
SERIES HISTORY
Campbell leads the series with Mercer, 26-12, which includes a 12-7 mark in Macon. Additionally, the Camels have won eight of the last 10 meetings. For several years, the teams met twice a season as both were members of the ASUN.
SCOUTING CAMPBELL
Campbell has played just one game so far this season, opening the year with a resounding 94-39 win over St. Andrews, an NAIA school. The Camels held the Knights to just 14 points in the first half and St. Andrews only reached double digits in the fourth quarter when it scored 21 points.
Breanna Foster scored a team-leading 19 points, which included a 5-for-11 performance from behind the arc. Foster only took one shot from inside the three-point line all game. The rookie was named the Big South Freshman of the Week for her performance against St. Andrews.
Brianna Cribb notched a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Taya Bolden also pulled down 10 boards in the game. Caroline Bowns rounded out the double-figure performances with 14 points of her own.
The Camels return just two starters from a year ago in juniors Summer Price and MaKala Rouse. Together the pair averaged 14.4 ppg and 7.2 rpg last year.
Campbell is led by first-year head coach Ronny Fisher. Fisher spent eight seasons at Presbyterian before heading to coach the Camels.
