Bears Rally For Win Over Kennesaw State
12/3/2016 5:43:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MACON, Ga. – Amanda Thompson had a career day and recorded her first double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds as she led the Mercer women's basketball team to a 61-46 win over Kennesaw State on Sunday afternoon. Linnea Rosendal scored a team-high 15 points for the Bears.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a slow start to the game for both teams, Kennesaw State outscored Mercer 6-0 in the final 3:48 of the first quarter to take a 10-4 lead. Deandrea Sawyers hit a jumper to open the second period and increase the Owls' lead but Mercer answered with a 7-2 spurt that closed the gap to 12-11 with 7:39 left in the half. After a quick four KSU points, Mercer closed out the half with a 9-2 run that gave the Bears a 20-18 lead heading into halftime.
Â
Mercer had a big third quarter that put the game in the Bears' hands. After opening the second half with a 7-2 spurt, there was a scoring drought for both teams for nearly three minutes. Mercer then closed out the final 4:06 of the period with a 17-5 run that put the Bears up 44-25. Kennesaw State hit four treys in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter and cut Mercer's lead to nine, 46-37. The teams traded baskets for the next four minutes and the Bears led 53-43 with 52 seconds on the clock as Kennesaw State started fouling. In the final 51 seconds of the game, Mercer outscored KSU 8-3 and all of Mercer's points came from free throws.

On the troublesome first quarter:
"Well, we had 10 turnovers in the first quarter and we don't always have 10 turnovers in a game. We weren't getting shots up and we shot 1-for-10, which is not us, we're a really, really good offensive team. I'm not sure what team showed up today, but it wasn't the normal us."
Â
On winning six straight games:
"We've played a really good schedule and I like the fact that we have the same team from last year. When you don't play your best and you still win in double figures is a bit of growth even though it feels like two steps back. I'm anxious to see how we'll come back and prepare for Georgia Tech, which will be a tougher challenge for us. Hopefully we can put this behind us and think about the good spots."
