Bears Falter at Georgia Tech
12/7/2016 10:10:00 PM | Women's Basketball
ATLANTA, Ga. – KeKe Calloway continued to shine from outside the arc, hitting a career-high six three-pointers to lead the Bears with 22 points. Unfortunately, Calloway's big performance wasn't enough to lift Mercer past Georgia Tech as the Yellow Jackets came away with a 70-50 win on Wednesday night.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Georgia Tech took control early with a three-pointer from Francesca Pan just 12 seconds into the game. The Yellow Jackets went up 6-0 before Amanda Thompson put Mercer on the board with a jumper two minutes into the first quarter. Linnea Rosendal cut Georgia Tech's advantage to three, 8-5, after hitting a three pointer two minutes later. Georgia Tech answered with a 15-4 run to close out the period and take a 23-9 lead.
Â
After the Yellow Jackets opened the second quarter with another trey from Pan, the Bears embarked on an 11-3 run that cut the lead to single-digits, 29-20, with 4:52 remaining in the half. The Yellow Jackets once again closed out the period strong, this time using a 10-6 run to go up 39-26 at the half.
Â
The teams traded baskets in the third quarter and with a 2:27 scoring drought to close out the quarter, neither had the momentum entering the final period. The fourth quarter started slow, but Georgia Tech used a 13-0 run to stretch its lead to 70-43 with 2:14 left in the game. Mercer scored the final seven points to close the gap to 70-50 as the clock wound down.

COACH GARDNER'S TAKE
General thoughts on the game:
"We didn't have any offensive productivity, with the exception of KeKe (Calloway). Tonight was the first game all year that our opponent's size really showed how small we are; and I thought our lack of depth showed up as well. Georgia Tech killed us on the glass and one of our goals was to not have such a large rebound margin; we got outrebounded by 21, so that was huge. Georgia Tech did turn it over 25 times, but we didn't capitalize on their turnovers like we normally do; we only had two transition points tonight. We have to bounce back on Saturday and get back rolling."
Â
On KeKe Calloway's performance:
"That's what KeKe does and that's what we needed her to do. Kahlia (Lawrence) typically has the opponent's best defender on her, so that leaves other players without the best defender and KeKe benefits from having Kahlia as a teammate. KeKe gets in the gym extra, she works on her shot and she takes great pride in her shot. We needed her to hit shots tonight and she did."
