Mercer Steams Past West Georgia, 67-36
12/10/2016 5:18:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MACON, Ga. – KeKe Calloway scored 21 points to lead a trio of double-digit Bears as Mercer cruised to a 67-36 win over West Georgia on Saturday afternoon. Kahlia Lawrence and Kayla Potts added 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams got off to a slow start and traded baskets for the entire first quarter, which included three ties. Mercer took a 9-6 lead with 2:34 left in the period before both teams went on a scoring drought for the remainder of the quarter. The Bears opened the second quarter with an 11-0 run that featured three treys from KeKe Calloway, pushing Mercer's lead to 20-6 with 7:26 to play in the half. A couple of well-timed three-pointers for the Wolves cut Mercer's lead to 24-14 less than three minutes later. The teams went back-and-forth for the final minutes of the half, but Mercer outscored West Georgia 8-6 to take a 32-20 lead into halftime.
Â
Mercer came out hot in the second half, using a 15-4 run to surge to a 47-24 lead with 5:37 remaining in the third quarter. After a basket for each team, Mercer went on another run, this time 9-2, to close out the period and work its way to a 30-point lead, 58-28. The fourth quarter was once again slow for both teams as Mercer only outscored West Georgia 9-8 in the period. West Georgia only got as close as 62-36 before Mercer scored the final five points of the game for the 67-36 win.

COACH GARDNER'S TAKE
General thoughts on the game:
"We got off to another slow start, which has happened in the last three games. Our goal was to play man-to-man and then KeKe (Calloway) got two quick fouls and she was our only offensive threat early, so we had to go back to zone. I thought we pulled it together in the third quarter and found a way. It wasn't our best effort, but we also had two and a half starters out. I think this exam week comes at a perfect time for us to get well, healthy and hopefully back to full steam."
Â
On the rebounding effort from Mercer tonight:
"We've talked about it at length. I talked to Kahlia specifically about getting more offensive rebounds and she had four. We did talk about outrebounded them because we got beat by Georgia Tech on the glass by 21. We've got to be more aware and it has to be a priority for us."
