THE BEARS IN THE TEAM STANDINGS
Mercer carded a 13-over-par 301 on the opening day, the team's best round since firing a 292 in the final round of Missouri's Johnny Imes Invitational last September. The Bears hold a narrow one-stroke lead over GolfStat.com Top-100 program Toledo and a two-shot advantage over host FGCU.
COACH DRINKARD'S TAKE
"Our team's energy level on the course today was awesome, they love to compete and it shows. We are pleased with where we are sitting on the leaderboard and at the same time ready to go out and score better than we did today. Looking forward to the opportunity we have for tomorrow and embracing the challenge."
"Payton achieved a "First" today for herself by hitting all 14 fairways and all 18 greens in route to her round of 70. She struck the ball really well and of course had a lot of opportunities. Like every player on the team, Payton's future is very bright and she is like a sponge listening and soaking up the experience. Jaelyn also got off to a good start today, which was great to see. The strength of her game is her short game and she was on fire getting up and down to save par 90% today."
MERCER SPOTLIGHT
Schanen, who leads the team with four Top-20 performances, led the tournament with five birdies in round one to tie a season-best with her 2-under tally of 70. The freshman has recorded rounds of under par four times this season.
HOLE OF THE DAY
Tindal had the Bears' most impressive hole of the day, escaping trouble on No. 8. The sophomore punched her way out of water to set up a nice approach shot and a par-saving 12-foot putt.
MERCER NOTABLES
- The Bears led the field on Par-3 and Par-5 holes in the opening round, while finishing second with 12 birdies on the day.
- Tindal fell just shy of her best round of the season, carding a 2-over 74 to put her on pace to record her first Top-10 finish of the year.
- Hanna, who is competing as an individual, gave Mercer three individuals inside the Top-10, shooting an even-par 36 on the back nine to card a 3-over 75 for the ninth-best score of the day.
- Deems finished a tournament-best 1-under on Par-3 holes, while Schanen topped all golfers with a 2-under tally on Par-5 opportunities.
