
Mercer Sweeps UAB Doubleheader in Season Opener

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer sand volleyball team swept UAB in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in Macon to begin the 2016 season 2-0. The Bears have now won two of their last three season openers.
Both of Mercer's wins were of the 3-2 variety. Mercer's three wins in both matches came from the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5 pairs. The sister duo of Emma and Sophie Peel recorded a score of 2-1 in the opener and then followed up with a 2-0 sweep in the second match of the day.
Atlantic Sun Preseason Player of the Year Tori Penrod and Emily Krogman teamed up at the No. 2 position and dominated on Saturday. The combo won both matches in straight sets.
The Bears' No. 3 team consisted of Gretja Otten and Jessica Johnson. Like Penrod and Krogman at the No. 2 position, the duo swept both of its matches by scores of 2-0 to help give Mercer the perfect start to the season.
The No. 3 team of Danielle Faust and Claire Waliczek and the No. 4 team of Ellie James and Madison Kerr were both unable to notch victories on opening day. However, both managed to grab a set in one of their two matches.
Mercer is now 5-8 against the Blazers in the all-time series and have won five of the last seven matches over the past three seasons.
UP NEXT
The Bears travel to Georgia State for a midweek matchup on Wednesday, March 9.The match is slated to start at 5 p.m.
