
Bears Overpowered by No. 10 Georgia State, 5-0

ATLANTA – The Mercer sand volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season on Wednesday afternoon, falling to No. 10 Georgia State by a final score of 5-0 in Atlanta. The Orange and Black is now 2-1 on the season.
The Bears claimed their lone set of the evening at the No. 5 position, as Gretja Otten and Jessica Johnson took the opening set 22-20. Georgia State responded with a 21-10 second set win. The third and decisive set came down to the wire, with the Panthers pulling out a 17-15 victory to take the match.
The No. 1 tandem of sisters Emma and Sophie Peel nearly recorded a victory in their 2-0 loss to GSU. The Peel's dropped the opener 21-18 before taking the second set the distance before falling 22-20.
Emily Krogman and Tori Penrod, the No. 2 pair, lost by a final score of 21-15, 21-19 and the No. 3 team of Claire Waliczek and Danielle Faust fell in a 2-0 decision, 21-18 in the first set and 21-16 in the second. At the No. 4 spot Madison Kerr and Ellie James dropped a 2-0 decision 21-12, 21-8.
Mercer is now 0-5 against the Panthers in the all-time series.
UP NEXT
Mercer is back in action this weekend at South Carolina. The Bears are set to compete in four matches over Saturday and Sunday at the Gamecock Classic. The Orange and Black opens with a matchup against South Carolina on Saturday, March 12 at 11 a.m.
