GREENSBORO, N.C. – Due to inclement weather in the Greensboro, N.C. area on Thursday night, the Mercer University softball team's Southern Conference Tournament semifinal game against Samford has been pushed back to a 3 p.m. start time on Friday, May 13.
The game was originally scheduled for noon on Friday. The final two games of Thursday's slate were delayed and eventually postponed until Friday. UNCG vs. Furman will start at 10 a.m. while ETSU vs. Chattanooga will begin at noon.
Samford, the SoCon regular season champion and the tournament's No. 1 seed, cruised into the semifinal game with a 3-0 victory on Thursday, largely due to SoCon Pitcher of the Year Mollie Hanson's no-hitter.
Mercer has made an improbable run to the semifinal matchup despite being the No. 7 seed in the tournament. The Bears defeated Furman 5-2 in nine innings on Wednesday before besting Chattanooga 7-4 on Thursday afternoon. Entering the seventh inning tied 4-4 with the Mocs, Mercer tacked on three runs to compliment another stellar performance in the circle by starting pitcher Megan Bilgri.
The sophomore right-hander has tossed all 16 innings of SoCon Tournament play for Mercer so far and has struck out seven batters while allowing only six runs.
The Bulldogs handled their business in the regular season series at Mercer on March 25-26, sweeping the Bears with scores of 11-6, 6-1 and 10-3. Hanson earned the win in all three contests.
With a win against Samford on Friday, Mercer has the chance to advance to a third consecutive league tournament championship game.
