MERCER IN THE TEAM STANDINGS
Mercer finished the first round of play in a tie for fifth with Houston Baptist at 8-under-par. The Bears are only two strokes behind fourth place Gardner-Webb and three strokes behind a top-three standing. Mercer has a one stroke lead over Jacksonville State. The only other Southern Conference school in the tournament, Western Carolina, is 12 strokes behind Mercer.
COACH KAYDEN'S TAKE
"Today was a very positive start to the season as we carded eight-under as a team. Stanton [Schorr] had a great stretch with several birdies and an eagle in a row to finish with a round of 66. Jerry [Ren] was five over at the turn but then he carded five straight birdies on the back nine to finish even-par. Anytime you shoot eight-under in your first tournament, it is a good sign. Today was a very good day for Mercer golf."
