Mercer Wins Low-Scoring Bout With Wofford, 54-39
1/21/2017 4:27:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MACON, Ga. – KeKe Calloway led all scorers with 13 points as the Bears and the Terriers played a low-scoring, defensive-minded game and the Mercer women's basketball team edged Wofford, 54-39, on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Three Mercer players came close to double-doubles as Calloway notched 13 points and eight rebounds, Alex Williams tabbed nine points and nine rebounds and Amanda Thompson tallied eight points and seven rebounds.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer opened the game with a quick 7-2 run, but Wofford countered and used a 7-2 spurt of its own to knot the score, 9-9, halfway through the first quarter. Both teams went scoreless for over a minute before Calloway hit a jumper to spark a 9-4 run as the Bears closed out the period and took an 18-13 lead.
Â
Wofford scored the first four points of the second quarter to cut Mercer's lead to one, 18-17, but a 6-2 spurt for the Bears put Mercer back up five, 24-19, with 5:24 remaining in the half. Wofford failed to hit a field goal for the rest of the period and Mercer's offense struggled as well as the Bears outscored the Terriers 9-4 to take a 31-23 lead into the locker room. Kayla Potts grabbed a rebound and made a basket as she was falling to the floor and the buzzer went off, giving Mercer a morale boost before the intermission.
Â
The third quarter was slow offensively for both the Bears and the Terriers as each team scored just nine points. The teams went back-and-forth as Mercer went 4-18 from the field and Wofford was 4-13. The scoring woes carried into the fourth quarter until Thompson sank a layup with 5:27 to play to spark Mercer's last run of the game. The Bears outscored the Terriers 10-3 in the final minutes of play to work their way to a 54-39 advantage as time expired.
Â
NOTABLES
On defense being the key to the game:
"We did not shoot the ball very well, especially in the third quarter. We take a lot of pride in our defense. We knew they were a good shooting basketball team and we were able to get out to them, kind of fly around and spread it out. We mixed it up with man and zone a little bit, which was different for us and good, I thought, with the one-day prep. I was really pleased with our defense and our rebounding."
Â
On the offensive play:
"We only scored 54 points, which is a little bit lower than what we're accustomed to. We weren't shooting the ball great and some of our players were missing quite a few shots, but Alex (Williams) was getting the offensive rebounds and a play would break down and Sydni (Means) would find the open person and get another assist. We kind of had to play outside of our routine, but that's the sign of a mature team, when you're not shooting the ball well, you find another way to win."
