Bears Fall 3-1 to SoCon Leader Samford Friday Night
10/13/2017 9:44:00 PM | Women's Soccer
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer Bears' women's soccer squad dropped a hard-fought 3-1 decision to the Southern Conference leading Samford Bulldogs Friday night at Bear Field.
STAT OF THE MATCH
Four separate Bears played the entire match for Mercer, including Jordyn Ebert, Haley McDuffee, Jorden Christensen and Megan Delmonico.
WOMAN OF THE MATCH
Senior forward Valeria Bermeo netted her third goal of the season to take a first half lead over the Bulldogs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears came out full of energy, hungry for the first goal of the match. In the 1st minute Isabel Rothschadl nearly snuck one past the keeper on a shot from outside the box but was just wide of the target.
In the 3rd minute the Bulldogs took their first shot of the match, but Jordyn Ebert was there to grab the save and keep the match knotted at 0-0. Ebert came up with another big save in the 17th minute.
The Bears struck first in the match when Valeria Bermeo flicked one past the keeper after receiving a ball off of a throw in from Haley McDuffee for the 1-0 lead in the 18th minute.
Mercer continued to push for another goal but Samford's defense stiffened, as the Bears took a 1-0 halftime lead.
Samford's Abriella Argueta equalized the match for the Bulldogs in the 54th minute, assisted by Jermaine Seoposenwe and Korrie Sauder.
The Bulldogs struck again in the 77th minute as Seoposenwe earned another assist on the night, connecting with Grace Parker for the 2-1 lead.
As the Bears attempted to push for a late equalizer, Samford was able to counter for an 80th minute goal from Nyalyn Moore.
NOTABLES
• Goalkeeper Jordyn Ebert earned two saves on the night and is now 7-6-0 while protecting the net. Ebert played all 90 minutes in the goal.
• Valeria Bermeo tied the team-high, 12 points, by scoring her third goal of the season.
• In the 85th minute, Mercer's Alina McCue was given a yellow card.
RECORDS UPDATE
• Mercer: 9-7-0 (3-3-0)
• Samford: 10-5-1 (6-0-0)
QUOTABLES
"It was a heavyweight battle tonight. We came out in the first half with a lot of energy and really set the tone. Getting the early goal gave us a lot of momentum. I have to give credit to Samford for the way they came out in the second half. Their backs were against the wall and they came out with energy. But we feel good. We hung in there with the defending SoCon champions for a good bit of time and if we meet them again hopefully we can get them next time." --Head Coach Tony Economopoulos
NEXT MATCH
• The Bears will conclude their home stand, hosting Chattanooga this Sunday, Oct. 15, beginning at 2 p.m.
