Mercer Finishes Ninth at Firestone Invitational

Freshman Spencer Ball places 15th individually

AKRON, Ohio – Mercer freshman Spencer Ball shot an even-par 72 to finish 15th individually while the Bears dropped one spot to place ninth with a final card of 28-over-par (294-299-299 -- 892) at the Firestone Invitational at the Firestone Country Club North Course on Tuesday.

Ball, who entered the day tied for 19th at two-over-par, cracked the top-15 and was followed by Stanton Schorr, who finished tied for 22nd after going four-over-par Tuesday.

Mercer on the Team Leaderboard
Mercer placed three strokes ahead of Ohio and William & Mary, who tied for 10th at 31-over-par. Illinois State (-5) beat out Cincinnati (-4) by one stroke to win the Firestone Invitational while host Akron rounded out the top three (+11).

Mercer on the Individual Leaderboard
Ball moved up four spots with his third-round par-72 effort on Tuesday. Ball has two top-20 finishes in his first two collegiate tournaments (finished 20th at the Inverness Intercollegiate). Brennan Bogdanovich, who played as Mercer's individual, moved up four spots as well to tie for 31st with a two-over-par round Tuesday.

Coach Kayden's Take
"We just didn't play well enough today and our expectations certainly weren't met," said head coach Kirk Kayden. "We have to be better prepared for a final round…I was pleased with Spencer Ball's effort all week on his way to a top-15 finish.

"We'll continue to work hard with an off week coming up before heading to Tennessee for the APSU Intercollegiate on Oct. 16-17."

Up Next
Mercer will take a week off from competition before playing in the Austin Peay Intercollegiate in Dickson, Tenn. on Oct. 16-17. The tournament will be held at the Greystone Golf Club.
