Morgan MacGilvary, Danielle Faust notch double-digit kills
CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Eighth-seeded Mercer advanced through the play-in round of the Southern Conference Tournament after downing No. 9 The Citadel, 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-16, 25-16), at the Ramsey Center on Friday morning.
Â
The Bears will face top-seeded Furman in the quarterfinal round at 2:30 p.m. Friday in their second match of the day.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (25-20) |Â Consecutive kills by Danielle Faust and Maddie Nunley set the tone early for Mercer. The Bears extended their lead with a 7-0 run, led by two kills from Paige Alsten. The Bulldogs retaliated with four straight points, bringing them within three points (12-9) and forcing a Mercer timeout. Morgan MacGilvary, who subbed in, registered three kills to keep Mercer in charge, 15-10. A 3-0 run by The Citadel was not enough as Alsten put the first set away with a kill.
Â
Set 2 (22-25) |Â Sarah Stewart started set two with a kill. After back-and-forth points for the two teams, the Bulldogs pulled ahead by two to take an 11-9 lead and never looked back. Despite two kills by MacGilvary and a kill by Maria Avramova, the Bears were unsuccessful in set two
Â
Set 3 (25-16) |Â Set three started with a 7-2 run, which jumpstarted Mercer's eventual set-three win. Another run was sparked by a kill from MacGilvary, who added two kills and extended the Bears' lead to 15-7. Avramova and Alsten would finish off the set with kills to quell The Citadel's late run.
Â
Set 4 (25-16) |Â Mercer's Faust and Krogman notched two kills in a strong start to the fourth set. After a 5-1 Bears run, Mercer extended its lead to 13-6. Olivia Sass would finalize the match after notching a service ace for the 25-16 win over The Citadel.
