Bears Conclude GSU Thanksgiving Classic with VCU

MACON, Ga. – Mercer Women's Basketball will conclude the 2017 GSU Thanksgiving Classic with a 4 p.m. showdown against the Rams of VCU tomorrow at the GSU Sports Arena in downtown Atlanta, Ga.

The Tenacious Trio
KeKe Calloway, Kahlia Lawrence and Sydni Means continue to pace the offense for the Bears. Each member of the trio is averaging above 10 points per contest, led by Lawrence's 18.6 points. The trio have finished 1-2-3 in scoring in three of the five games this season for Mercer. Most recently, Calloway led the squad in points with 23 against Western Kentucky.

Climbing the Ladder
Kahlia Lawrence continues her impressive start to the season, notching 18 points against the Lady Toppers on Friday night. Lawrence needs just 12 points to pass Briana Williams to move into 8th all-time in Mercer history. Lawrence is currently 268 points away from the 2,000-point milestone.

Threes Company
Mercer is shooting .400 from downtown this season, boasting a 30-of-75 mark. The Bears knocked down 8-of-19 against the Lady Toppers on Friday, tying a season high that was registered in the season opener at UCF. Calloway leads the three-point shooting with 19 made triples on the year. Mercer is averaging 6.0 threes per contest, ranking second in the Southern Conference.

The Bears are on a two-game losing skid, having fallen to the Lady Bulldogs of Georgia and the Lady Toppers of Western Kentucky. Mercer had one two-game skid all of last season, dropping matchups to Chattanooga and Alabama to conclude the 2016-17 campaign.

Last Time Out
The Bears dropped a nailbiter on Friday night at the GSU Sports Arena. Mercer fell to Western Kentucky, 67-62, after clawing back from a 15-point deficit. The Bears began the contest in a 13-0 hole but did not give in, later claiming a 60-57 advantage with 1:43 left to play. However, the Lady Toppers ended the game on a 10-2 run to claim the five-point victory. Calloway led the Bears with a game-high 23 points, tying her career high for three pointers made with seven. Lawrence ended the contest with 18 points, while Means finished with 11 points and seven assists. Thompson did not register a point, but pulled down 11 rebounds for the contest.

Series History
VCU leads the all-time series, 1-0. The two squads last met on December 6, 1997 with the Rams upending the Bears in Houston, Texas by the final score of 64- 32.

Battering the Rams
VCU enters the contest with an 0-4 overall record. The Rams are the youngest team in the Atlantic 10 with just two juniors and the rest being underclassmen. VCU most recently fell to Georgia State in the GSU Thanksgiving Classic by the final score of 61-56, despite leading 37-20 at the half. The Rams are led in scoring by Tera Reed with 12.8 points per game as the only double-digit scorer for VCU. Reed also averages 6.8 rebounds per contest. Bria Gibson is not far behind Reed, nearly averaging a double-double with 8.8 points and 9.8 rebounds per outing. The Rams are allowing 77.2 points per contest to their opponents, while only netting 58.0 of their own. VCU averages just 3.8 threes per contest, posting a percentage of .242 on 15-of-62 from downtown. VCU also averages 21.8 turnovers per contest, while recording 10.5 assists per game.
