Lawrence nets 27, while Means picks up 14 dimes
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Mercer outscored Charlotte by 13 in the final quarter to pull away for the 90-74 victory, notching its 10th consecutive victory. With the win, the Bears improve to 13-2 heading into Southern Conference action.
Â
Stat of the Game
Mercer shared the wealth today, distributing 26 assists on its 37 made field goals. This marks the third time in four games that the Bears have dished out 20-plus assists. Mercer turned the ball over 10 times, ending a streak of four consecutive games with single-digit turnovers.
Â
Player of the Game
Kahlia Lawrence continued where she left off in Thursday's win, notching 27 points on 11-of-16 shooting. The senior guard also pulled down seven rebounds and handed out six assists in the victory.
Â
How It Happened
Mercer started off the game on an 11-3 run, knocking down five of its first seven shots from the field. For much of the period, the Bears maintained their lead until a 12-3 Charlotte run in the final four minutes saw Mercer trailing by two at the conclusion of the quarter, 21-19.
Â
The two squads fought tooth-and-nail for the first three minutes of the second quarter, drawing even at 29 apiece. The 49ers then went on a 10-1 run over the next four minutes, capped off by a jumper by Laia Raventos. Mercer responded with a 7-0 run in the final three minutes of the opening half, all seven points coming from KeKe Calloway, cutting the deficit to just two at the intermission.
Â
The Bears scored eight of the first 12 points in the second half, taking the two-point edge over Charlotte following Rachel Selph's layup with 7:06 to play in the third quarter. Selph's layup provided the Bears with the lead for good. Mercer stretched its lead to seven before Charlotte closed the quarter on a 4-0 run to trim the Orange and Black lead to just three.
Â
Calloway connected on a three to open the fourth quarter, sparking the Bears' offense in pulling away from the 49ers. Following the triple, Mercer never led by less than six points, taking its first double-digit advantage with 4:49 to play, 75-65. The Bears' lead proved too much for Charlotte as Mercer outscored the 49ers 15-9 down the stretch to claim the 16-point victory.

Coach's Corner
On the success of post players tonight
"We knew that in Charlotte's zone, there were going to be spots that were open. Those are Amanda and Rachel's spots that they practice knocking down jumpers every day. I'd like to get that productivity consistently and then we will be in business."
Â
On Sydni's ability to find the open player
"Sydni is a very special point guard for us. You look at 16 assists one night and then turn around and she has 14 the next night. Her teammates look to her as a leader and it makes everyone's life on the floor much easier."
Â
On success of non-conference
"I thought we played an excellent schedule in terms of teams that play different styles of play. I am certainly pleased with the record but I am more pleased with the way our players are growing individually and collectively. We understand and respect how good the Southern Conference is and we are excited for the next challenge."
