Mercer Overpowers Eastern Shore, 13-2
2/17/2017 8:08:00 PM | Baseball
The Bears (1-0) had 12 different players combine for 18 hits in the contest while Eastern Shore (0-1) committed three errors in the game. Mercer scored four runs in the second inning then scored four more runs over the next three innings. Eastern Shore, which took a brief 1-0 lead in the first inning, was only able to add one more run in the seventh inning before allowing five runs over the seventh and eighth innings.
Ryan Askew (1-0) was credited with the win after allowing one unearned run on five hits while striking out four over 6.0 innings on the mound. Chris Melrath (0-1) took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits in two innings.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Matt Meeder led the power surge at the plate with his 4-for-6 performance. He registered back-to-back doubles in the seventh and eighth innings, the latter driving in two runs. His four hits marks a career high while his two doubles ties a career best mark.
STAT OF THE GAME
Eight of Mercer's 13 runs scored in the game came with two outs on the board. The Bears batters seemingly never felt pressure facing an inning's final out and scored over 60 percent of their runs facing two outs. That includes all four of Mercer's runs in the second inning, the frame that Mercer's batters began their offensive onslaught. Â
PITCHERS OF RECORD
- Win: Ryan Askew, Mercer (1-0)
- Loss: Chris Melrath, Eastern Shore (0-1)
"Ryan [Askew] threw the ball really well for us and got us off to a good start. We were able to do some damage with two outs and post some runs in the second inning. Some guys got a chance to play for us today and hopefully we will be good tomorrow."
On being able to play so many players off the bench in the first game:
"We are trying to figure out matchups and what we are going to do in game 10, 15 and 20. Ben Upton swung the bat well tonight and he has been sick all spring. I think Alex Crotty is going to be a great baseball player and we got him in there. David Posas played well tonight and Adam Moore had a big hit. Just getting guys a chance. I thought Lingo and Conrad Cornell did well and I'm really proud of them playing well."
