Bats Stay Hot as Mercer Pounds Eastern Shore, 15-0
2/18/2017 6:22:00 PM | Baseball
MACON, Ga. – JT Thomas was 3-for-3 with 6 RBIs and six pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts, no walks and a shutout as Mercer pounded Maryland Eastern Shore, 15-0, Saturday afternoon at OrthoGeorgia Park in Macon.
Thomas got the fireworks started with a grand slam in the first inning and Mercer (2-0) never let up, scoring 15 runs on 14 hits while taking advantage of six walks and five hit batters courtesy of the Eastern Shore (0-2) pitching staff.
After the grand slam, most of Mercer's runs came in the fifth inning when the Bears scored seven runs on six hits, three of which were doubles.
Eastern Shore stranded six runners in the game, three of which were left in scoring position.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
JT Thomas gets the nod after crushing a grand slam beyond the left field wall as part of a six RBI game. The junior designated hitter finished the game 3-for-3 with three runs scored and eight total bases as he followed up that home run with a pair of doubles on either side of a walk.
STAT OF THE GAME
Mercer's combined pitching staff Saturday struck out 15 Eastern Shore batters while not allowing a walk or a run.
PITCHERS OF RECORD
"It all started with Austin Cox. He has been outstanding. I am really proud of him and happy for him. It is the difference a year makes. His commitment level has gone up. To throw six different arms with no walks is great. Brent Shade has done a great job with those guys. Defensively, we played error-free. When you pitch and play defense, you have a chance to win.
On JT Thomas:
"When we signed him, we knew he was a great defensive player – a great catch-and-throw guy – but we didn't know how offensive he was going to be. He just works hard and doesn't give at bats away. He's been great in the preseason, he's been great in our early spring segment and he is a fighter, a worker and a warrior. It is hard to get him out of the lineup right now."
