Thomas, Edgeworth Power Mercer to Sweep
2/19/2017 4:39:00 PM | Baseball
MACON, Ga. – JT Thomas and Danny Edgeworth hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning and a Mercer broke a tie with a four-run eighth inning as the Bears rallied for an 8-4 win to sweep Maryland Eastern Shore Sunday afternoon at OrthoGeorgia Park.
The back-to-back blasts tied the game in the sixth after Mercer (3-0) faced an early 4-0 deficit. The Bears then took the lead on a bases-loaded wild pitch in the eighth before Edgeworth drove in another run. Mercer sent three balls over the outfield wall as Hunter Bening hit a solo shot in the third inning.
After starting pitcher Kevin Coulter allowed four runs on 10 hits, Mercer's bullpen shut down the Hawks (0-3) with seven strikeouts, two hits and no walks issued from the three pitchers that came on in relief.
The win marked the third time in four years Mercer has swept the opening series of the season.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
This has to be a shared honor as JT Thomas and Danny Edgeworth were both 2-for-3 from the plate with two runs scored, two RBIs and a home run. The duo ensured that no Eastern Shore pitcher wanted to face the middle of the Bears lineup.
STAT OF THE GAME
Mercer managed only three hits through five innings of play, one of which was a Hunter Bening home run in the third inning. After the game passed the midway point, the Mercer bats came alive as the Bears registered seven hits and scored seven runs over the final three innings.
PITCHERS OF RECORD
- Win: Nick Spear, Mercer (1-0)
- Loss: Toby Hoskins, Eastern Shore (0-1)
"I tell our guys all the time that you are never a good team until you can come from behind and win. We got down early. They played really well today. They had a great effort from a first-year player on the mound and defensively they were very good. They didn't give us anything. We were able to put some hits together late in the game."
