Bears Outlast Bradley in Slugfest, 11-10
3/10/2017 10:04:00 PM | Baseball
Down 4-3, Mercer (12-3) used a four-run third inning and back-to-back solo home runs in the seventh to help withstand the rally. Bradley (3-7) scored six runs in the final three innings but a strike 'em out-throw 'em out double play ended the game as Bradley's only stolen base attempt of the night was gunned down by Mercer catcher Charlie Madden.
Mercer's big bats again were key to the victory as the Bears hit multiple home runs for the eighth time in 15 games this season.
Ryan Askew (3-0) fanned four in seven innings but made two big defensive plays including snagging one ground ball as he was falling then throwing the batter out at first while sitting on the ground.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Alex Hanson was hot at the plate in his 4-for-5 performance with three RBIs and three runs scored. Two of his four hits were for extra bases as he ripped a two-run double to right center in the third inning then was on the trailing end of Trey Truitt on back-to-back solo home runs to start the bottom half of the seventh inning. Hanson also stole two bases in the contest.
STAT OF THE GAME
Jackson Ware faced 15 pitches in his at bat in the seventh inning as he eventually drew a walk. Facing a full count, Ware fouled off seven consecutive pitches to stay alive before finally drawing ball four.
PITCHERS OF RECORD
- Win: Ryan Askew (3-0)
- Loss: Mitch Janssen (0-1)
- Save: Nick Spear (1)
"This was just one of those nights where the ball was flying. The air was light and we got some balls in the air. Charlie Madden was special at the end to throw the guy out."
On Ryan Askew:
"He battled. It was just one of those nights where you are going to score some runs. He is a warrior. He fell down and still made plays. Give Bradley credit, they were really good tonight."
On Jackson Ware's 15-pitch at bat:
"It was an unbelievable at bat. I'm really proud of Jackson. He had a great hit on a hit-and-run. He did a good job getting some runners in for us. He is one of those guys that is dependable, steady, and consistent and helps you win baseball games."
