Truitt Drives in Winning Run as Bears Claim Series
3/11/2017 5:40:00 PM | Baseball
After Bradley (3-8) tied the game off Derek Bangert's two-run home run in the sixth, both teams would put runners in scoring position but be unable to break the tie until Truitt stepped to the plate in the eighth after Matt Meeder's double. Truitt would rip a line drive single to left to send Meeder home and break the tie.
Mercer (13-3) remained perfect at home this season behind 13 strikeouts while taking advantage of four Bradley errors. The win clinched the series for the Bears.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Hunter Bening gets the nod for his 2-for-4 performance especially considering both of his hits were for extra bases. Bening's solo home run in the second inning – his fifth of the season – matched his entire season total of five home runs last year. Bening followed that up with an RBI double in his next at bat, collecting a total of two RBIs on the day, while scoring two runs total.
STAT OF THE GAME
This goes to Austin Cox's strikeout-to-walk ratio in Saturday's game, which was as good as anyone can hope for. Facing 26 batters, Cox struck out 10 – marking a new career high – and did not issue a walk in his six innings on the mound.
PITCHERS OF RECORD
- Win: Zach Graveno (1-0)
- Loss: Nathan Stong (0-1)
- Save: Nick Spear (2)
"They have a good club. They just won't go away. They play in a great league – the Missouri Valley Conference is a great baseball conference. Austin Cox got us off to a great start, especially after he got sort of hit around a little bit but 10 strikeouts and no walks today, that is unbelievable for Austin."
RECORDS UPDATE
- Mercer: 13-3 (10-0 home)
- Bradley: 3-8 (3-8 away)
- Mercer: So. RHP Kevin Coulter (1-0, 8.16)
- Bradley: R-Sr. RHP Eric Scheuermann (0-2, 7.91)

- The Bears continued their home winning streak, which now sits at 10 games. A win Sunday would tie the school record of 11 consecutive home wins to start a season.
- Austin Cox's 10 strikeouts sets a new career high for the southpaw. His previous high was five against Eastern Shore on Feb. 18, 2017.
- Hunter Bening, who hit five home runs all last season, hit his fifth home run of the year in Saturday's game. It marked the second consecutive game the senior has hit a home run.
