Joe Powers Mercer to 4-3 Win at Georgia in Extra Innings

Redshirt-senior comes through with game-winning double in the 12th inning
ATHENS, Ga. – Howard Joe connected on a game-winning RBI-double in the 12th inning to vault Mercer past Georgia, 4-3, in a rollercoaster game Tuesday night at Foley Field.
The win completed Mercer's season sweep of the Bulldogs and marked the fifth time in the last six head-to-head meetings that the Bears have walked away victorious. Mercer improved to 14-4 overall while Georgia dropped to 7-10.
After Ryan Hagan drew a one-out walk in the 12th, Joe roped the go-ahead double down the left field line to plate Hagan from first base. Nick Spear (4-0) picked up the win on the mound as Mercer used three pitchers – Chase Burks, Robert Broom and Spear – over the 12 frames. Burks worked around a rocky first inning to toss a career-high 4.1 innings while Broom notched six strikeouts over four innings of two-hit relief.
Mercer appeared to have the victory in hand three innings earlier when Charlie Madden drew a two-out bases-loaded walk that scored pinch runner Adam Moore from third base. However, Georgia responded with a RBI-double in the bottom of the ninth to equalize it and send the game to extra innings. Both teams traded a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and top of the second innings.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Fifth-year senior Howard Joe came through in the clutch with the game-winning hit to cap a well-rounded game by the Bears. Joe went 1-for-2 at the plate after checking into the game at first base in the bottom of the ninth after Hunter Bening was pulled for a pinch runner.
Joe now has three doubles among his five total hits this season.
STAT OF THE GAME
Twelve innings. After it took Mercer nine innings to earn a walk-off win over Georgia in Macon earlier this season and they played three frames more Tuesday night. It is the Bears' longest game of the 2017 season.
COACH GIBSON'S TAKE
"Tonight was a great baseball game. I'm really proud of Chase Burks to get a big start up here. Our bullpen was phenomenal; you can't say enough about [Robert] Broom and Nick Spear. We were about to get one more [run]…I'm really happy for Howard Joe who came up with the big hit to score [Ryan] Hagan from first base.
"This is a great win for us, our university and our program. The big thing is we're 4-0 in state [Georgia] and Georgia is a really good ball club that will win games this year. To come up here and win at their place, it says a lot about the kind of program we have."
