Kevin Coulter tosses five innings in the win
MACON, Ga. – Kevin Coulter tossed five innings of one-hit baseball and Mercer struck early with four runs in the first inning to power its way to a 9-2 win over Florida A&M Tuesday evening at OrthoGeorgia Park.
Mercer (18-4) won its fifth straight game and earned its first victory against Florida A&M (14-6) this season after the Rattlers took two in Tallahassee earlier this season (Feb. 28-March 1). Coulter (2-1) was dominant throughout his fifth start of the year, retiring 12 Rattlers in a row at one point. He forced seven groundouts and did not allow a runner past first base.
Danny Edgeworth and Charlie Madden had a pair of hits and RBIs each in the seven-run win. Edgeworth notched a RBI-single to help Mercer take advantage of three walks and a pair of Florida A&M errors in the opening frame while Madden launched his Southern Conference-leading ninth home run of the season in the sixth.
The two teams will square up again Wednesday at OrthoGeorgia Park with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
The nod goes to Coulter, who stifled the Florida A&M bats over the course of five innings. It was the sophomore's best outing of the season as he struck out four batters while walking only one.
STAT OF THE GAME
Mercer put the game away early for the second straight game using a four-run first inning to its advantage. The Bears have outscored their opponents 37-15 in the opening inning.
COACH GIBSON'S TAKE
"Another great win for us – Florida A&M is ranked No. 25 in the latest RPI [poll] and it was good to get one back from those guys. We are now 11-1 at home and we have done a good job of protecting our home field, as we get ready for conference season.
"Kevin Coulter was outstanding tonight and our bullpen backed him up, particularly Zach Graveno. Our offense got us ahead early and we saw Charlie [Madden] and Edgeworth have another couple big games for us."
