Bears Overcome Early Deficit to Down Florida A&M
3/22/2017 7:37:00 PM | Baseball
Seven-run fourth-inning fuels Bears in Craig Gibson’s 450th career win
The Bears improved to 19-4 overall with their sixth straight victory while Head Coach Craig Gibson notched his 450th career victory at the program's helm. Florida A&M fell to 14-7. The two teams split their four-game season series, 2-2.
A three-run home run by the Rattlers' Aubrey McCarty in the first inning led to a 5-1 deficit for Mercer heading into the bottom of the second. Mercer scored 10 unanswered runs the rest of the way, highlighted by seven on five hits in the fourth. Consecutive RBI doubles by JT Thomas and Charlie Madden were followed up by an intentional walk of Danny Edgeworth and a three-run home run by Jackson Ware, which added the exclamation mark to the fourth-inning comeback.
Robert Broom (3-1) earned the win with three innings of relief while allowing one hit and striking out three. Five Mercer relievers – Broom, Carter Varga, Christian Vann, Andrew Kane and Nick Spear – combined to limit the Rattlers to three hits over the final seven innings and struck out eight batters in the process.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Robert Broom set the tone for the comeback with yet another quality relief appearance on the mound. After the Rattlers scored five runs through the first two innings, Broom shut the door over the next three frames while the Bears' bats came alive. It is the sixth time this season Broom has struck out three or more batters in an outing.
STAT OF THE GAME
Mercer improved to 6-3 when trailing after three innings of play.
COACH GIBSON'S TAKE
"We responded well to falling behind early on and beat a good team tonight at home. We had some good at bats as Charlie [Madden] and JT [Thomas] extended the fourth inning with two outs before Jackson [Ware] put one out of the park.
"I'm really proud of our bullpen. Broom stopped everything when he came in and after that it was by committee. I really challenge Andrew Kane in the dugout last night and he responded with an outstanding outing today.
"I thought Conrad Cornell gave us a huge boost tonight by coming into the game and beating out a ball he hit to first base. Adam Moore scoring as a pinch runner was a nice jolt for our offense, too."
