MACON, Ga. – Mercer carded the second-best round of the day and three Bears finished in the top 10 as action concluded at the 2017 Brickyard Collegiate in Macon Tuesday. Mercer's 3-over-par 291 on the final day vaulted the Bears two spots to a tie for fourth overall.
Hannah Mae Deems was seemingly on fire in the second round carding a 2-under-par 70 to tie for third overall alongside Old Dominion's Katarina Vlasinova. The junior averaged 4.50 on Par 5s in the tournament, the second-best mark in the field and finished the 54 holes at even-par 216.
Freshman Tiffany Kang, playing as an individual, finished one stroke behind Deems at 1-over-par after her second 1-under-par 71 round of the tournament. Kang led all golfers in the tournament with a 2.50 average on Par 3s. Terese Romeo, who carded six birdies in Tuesday's round, finished 10th at 3-over-par 219 for the tournament.
Overall Mercer jumped two spots into a tie for fourth with Kennesaw State at 28-over-par, topping four other Southern Conference schools two weeks before the SoCon Championship tees off.
MERCER SCORECARD
MERCER ON THE TEAM LEADERBOARD
Of the 14 other teams in the tournament, the only other teams to top the Bears were ranked in the top 40 nationally. The Bears tied Kennesaw State for fourth place at 28-over-par and beat four other Southern Conference teams in the field, including edging sixth-place ETSU by 10 strokes. No. 9 Furman won the team title at 15-over-par while Augusta and No. 21 Texas A&M tied for second at 19-over-par.
MERCER ON THE INDIVIDUAL LEADERBOARD
No team at the Brickyard Collegiate put more individuals in the top 10 than Mercer. That is impressive considering the field included three teams in the top 40 entering the week with three individuals in the top 50. Hannah Mae Deems led the way with an even-par scorecard over the tournament including a 2-under-par round Tuesday. Terese Romeo was the next best team scorer as her six birdies on the day led her to a 1-under-par final round and a 3-over-par tournament score to finish 10th. Tiffany Kang, competing as an individual, carded her second 1-under-par 71 round of the tournament as she placed fifth overall at 1-over-par.
ETSU's Loy Hee Ying (who carded a course record 4-under-par 68 in the final round) and Furman's Haylee Harford were co-medalists with a 3-under-par 213 tournament score. Additionally, Augusta's Jessica Haigwood matched that 4-under-par 68 course record in the same round.
