Long Balls Launch Mercer Past Kennesaw State
4/4/2017 8:36:00 PM | Baseball
Â
Trey Truitt hit a go-ahead three-run blast in the third while Charlie Madden and Danny Edgeworth went back-to-back leading off the fourth as eight Bears pitchers combined to limit Kennesaw State to six hits. Mercer improved to 25-6 overall and 5-1 against in-state foes while the Owls fell to 12-17 overall.
Â
Kennesaw State took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second with three hits against Zach Graveno, but the Bears quickly responded by sending 11 batters to the plate in both the third and fourth frames. Graveno (4-0) earned the win while Sawyer Gipson-Long, Josh Knies, Carter Varga, Andrew Kane, Christian Vann, Kyle Bialousz and Chase Burks all logged action on the mound.
Â
Mercer's next contest will be Friday at 6 p.m. as the Bears welcome Southern Conference foe Samford to OrthoGeorgia Park for a three-game weekend series. Wednesday's nonconference game vs. Georgia State was cancelled Tuesday night due to pending inclement weather.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Truitt reached base four times in a 1-for-2 performance with three walks. His game-high three RBIs came off his three-run home run, which was his sixth of the season.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Fifteen. Mercer drew a season-best 15 walks to compliment nine collective hits against the Owls' pitching staff. Alex Hanson and Truitt drew three walks apiece, setting and tying career-highs for both.
Â
COACH GIBSON'S TAKE
"This was a good way to start what is basically the second half of our season. I'm really proud of some individual performances tonight: Sawyer Gipson-Long got us started well; Chase Burks bounced back with a good inning; Kyle Bialousz got a big out with the bases loaded.
Â
"Offensively, Trey Truitt got us going with a big hit out of the park and Charlie [Madden] and Danny [Edgeworth] smoked a couple too. This was a good team effort tonight against a good club."
