Leone Leads Mercer In Rally Past Old Dominion

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Kate Leone scored a season-high-tying six goals, including four in the final 20 minutes of play as Mercer rallied from a five-goal deficit in the second half to defeat Old Dominion, 18-14, in the quarterfinals of the ASUN Championship. The Bears eliminated a second-half, five-goal deficit for the second time this season, marking the largest deficit overcome in program history.

Kate Christian scored a season-high four goals and had a career-high five assists for a career-high nine points. All four of Christian's goals also came in the final 20 minutes of the game. Christian's nine points tied the ASUN Tournament single-game record, while she set a new record with her five assists. Lindsey Zeltwanger added two goals and two assists for four points as she became Mercer's first player to notch 100 career assists on Thursday.
Both Audrey Allen and Audrey Robertson grabbed seven draw controls, tying the ASUN Tournament single-game record.

Mercer advances to the ASUN Championship semifinals and will face No. 1 seed Coastal Carolina on Friday at 1 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer took a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes off goals from Meghan Segreti and Kelly Hagerty as it looked like the Bears were going to control the pace of the game. Old Dominion answered with five straight goals, including four from the eight-meter, to take a 5-2 lead with 19:52 remaining in the first half. The Bears scored three of the next four goals to cut the Monarchs' lead to 6-5 with 5:40 remaining in the half. Old Dominion answered with a 3-1 run of its own to take a 9-6 lead into halftime.

Erica Coyne scored the first goal of the second half, but Old Dominion remained in control of the momentum for the first 10 minutes of the period, taking a 13-8 lead with 23:09 remaining. Christian scored back-to-back goals in 26 seconds to cut ODU's lead to three, but the Monarchs added a goal just over a minute later to go back up four, 14-10. That goal turned out to be the last for Old Dominion as Mercer exploded with eight unanswered goals in the final 17:09 of the game. Leone scored four goals during that run and Christian added two, including the game-winner. Mercer's run moved the final score to 18-14 as the Bears' recorded their first-ever win in the ASUN Championship.
