OXFORD, Miss. – Mercer fell to Austin Peay, 3-1 (18-25, 23-25, 25-16, 23-25), and Ole Miss, 3-2 (18-25, 25-21, 25-21, 11-25, 11-15), on Friday in the final day of the Ole Miss Classic, wrapping up a three-match road trip. The Bears went 1-2 at the Ole Miss Classic and return to Macon with a 4-4 overall record.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Austin Peay)
Set 1 (18-25) |Â Mercer started the first set with a brick wall in the form of Gabby Meyering (solo) and Emily Krogman and Paige Alsten (assisted), who notching back-to-back blocks. A pair of kills by Krogman and Danielle Faust could not tighten the score as the Governors took a seven-point win.
Â
Set 2 (23-25) |Â The Bears' offense was sparked by a 7-2 run, forcing Austin Peay to take a timeout, but the Governors would rally ahead. Mercer tied the set with three straight points before Austin Peay pulled away for the two-set lead.
Â
Set 3 (25-16) |Â Three kills by Krogman, Alsten, and Faust started the third set in strong fashion. After a 3-0 run by the Governors, the Bears bounced back and scored three straight points of their own. An 8-2 run put the Bears ahead by seven and a kill from MacGilvary finished the set. Â
Set 4 (23-25) |Â The Bears took a 6-3 lead to start the fourth set, but were quickly offset by Austin Peay's offensive attack. Mercer owned a 17-13 lead but a late rally by the Governors tied the set at 23 apiece before they closed out the match.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED (Ole Miss)
Set 1 (18-25) |Â Mercer could not come back from a 12-5 run by the Rebels that started off the match. A negative hitting percentage doomed the Bears as they could not find their offensive rhythm until later sets.
Set 2 (25-21) |Neck-and-neck play pursued until Mercer jumped ahead with a kill by Alsten. The Bears added a 6-0 run to take a 19-13 lead. Despite a 3-0 run by the Rebels, they were unable to stop Krogman's pinpoint kill to win the set, assisted by Claire Waliczek.
Â
Set 3 (25-21) |Â Mercer took advantage of 15 errors by the Rebels and overcame an 8-0 run by Ole Miss early in the set. The victory put the Bears ahead 2-1 in the match heading into the fourth.
Â
Set 4 (11-25) |Â Mercer and Ole Miss were tight through the first 13 points with the Rebels leading 7-6. The Bears struggled from there, however, as Ole Miss pulled away for the largest win of the match.
Â
Set 5 (11-15) | Alsten shined in the final set with three kills and a block but the Bears were unable to squeeze out a victory over host Ole Miss in the fifth set. Mercer trailed 13-11 at one point before Ole Miss notched the final two points of the match.
Â
NOTABLES
"We just couldn't quite find a way to win against Austin Peay. We lost two sets 25-23, but we are going to work on push-time after 20 [points] this week in practice and work on getting better execution at those times.
Â
"Sets two and three against Ole Miss were the best we have played since I received the job here. There was a resiliency to every point. Our style had a much more physical team on their heels for long stretches. Regardless, we are still 0-2 today and that does not sit well with me and this team. We have committed to three hard days of work this week which includes improving execution individually, in position groups and in team systems."
RECORD UPDATE
Mercer will continue its season in Charleston, S.C. at the Charleston Invitational. The Bears will start the competition on Sept. 15 against Buffalo, followed by College of Charleston and Appalachian State on Sept. 16 at 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
