
Women’s Tennis Team Opens Season with 6-1 Triumph Over Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. –The Mercer women's tennis team began their 2018 spring season by taking down the defending SWAC champions, Alabama State, Friday afternoon at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center. Anna Sovic helped lead the Bears to victory, returning from injury in her first match back since March.

The Bears stretched to an early 1-0 lead, winning the doubles competition. The No. 2 duo of Katie Sidor and Anna Sovic topped Reka Szentes and Chloe Kabamba, 6-3. Mercer's No. 1 pairing of Celine Schepers and Grace Korta clinched the doubles point as they downed Alabama State's Gabriela Lackova and Lea Krajcovicova, 6-3. On court No. 3, Marie Mottet and Christie Cesarini fell to Mirna Curcic and Marija Blazevic, 7-5.

Mercer extended their lead to 2-0 when No. 5 seeded Motted bested Curcic in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Court No. 2 saw Sidor defeat Krajcovicova in style, 6-2, 6-0. The Bears' No. 4 Maeva Roquebert earned her first collegiate win with a stunnig 6-3, 6-4, success over Gabriela Lackova. No. 3 Korta clinched the match for the Bears with a 6-2, 6-3, win over Kabamba. On court No. 1, Schepers was defeated by Reika Szentes, 6-4, 6-3. The Bears' No. 6 slotted Sovic rallied after dropping the first set to top Blazevic, 3-6, 7-5. 10-5.

The Bears will return to Macon for a four-match home-stand beginning with hosting Georgia Southern on Friday, Feb. 2.
