Bears Host Pair of Matches this Weekend, Beginning with Georgia Southern Friday

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's tennis team will return to their home court to begin a four-match home-stand beginning with a pair of matches this weekend. First, the Bears will faceoff with Georgia Southern Friday, Feb. 2 beginning at 2 p.m. On Saturday, Feb. 3, Mercer will then take on the South Alabama Jaguars.

The Bears are coming off a 6-1 season-opener victory at Alabama State. Mercer claimed the doubles competition with ease as well taking five of the six singles matchups. In the five singles victories, the Bears won in straight sets. On court No. 6, Anna Sovic rallied from a sesufft down to earn her first victory since suffering injury last march.

Georgia Southern enters the matchup coming off a recent 6-1 victory over Kennesaw State. The Eagles finished the 2017 season with an 11-12 overall record, falling to South Alabama in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Tournament.

South Alabama enters Saturday's matchup already holding three wins under their belt with an undefeated 3-0 record. The Jaguars opened their season with a 6-1 defeat of Jackson State followed by a 7-0 sweep of Xavier (L.A.) and a 4-0 sweep over Grambling. South Alabama finished the 2017 season with a 21-5 overall record and was a perfect 13-0 at home. The Jaguars 2017 season came to an end in the Sun Belt Championship, falling to Louisiana Monroe, 4-3.

Following Saturday's matchup, the Bears will continue to protect home court as they host Kennesaw State next Tuesday, Feb. 6 beginning at 11 a.m.
