Mercer Falls to ETSU, 3-1, at Home

Bears force fourth set against conference-leading ETSU
MACON, Ga. – Mercer (9-10, 2-6 SoCon) marked its second Southern Conference home match loss against ETSU on Friday evening. The Bears fell 3-1 (15-25, 23-25, 25-23, 24-26) to the conference leaders. Mercer is now 5-2 at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (15-25) | After a quick four-straight points, ETSU missed a serve, allowing the Bears on the board. After a few back-and-forth points for both teams, the Bucs were able to extend their lead to 13-5 after adding a 5-0 run. The Bears stayed trailing the Bucs for the remainder of the set, despite Annie Karle, Roberta Todd and Brittany Major all adding two kills each.Â

Set 2 (23-25) | Mercer began set two trailing ETSU, before tying the match up at 10 after an Amber Gibson service ace. The Bears were able to knot the set up once more (12-12) before the Bucs took back the lead. A 7-2 run led by Karle, bringing the Bears within one point (22-21). ETSU outscored Mercer in the final five points to take the second set 25-23.

Set 3 (25-23) | Roberta Todd sparked set three for the Bears, notching a kill for the opening point. Despite four tie-ups the Bears held on to the front, until the Bucs took control at 7-6. Another three tie-ups occurred before Mercer reclaimed the lead for the remainder of the set. Despite ETSU pulling the score within one point (19-18), Alsten and Todd registered two points apiece to help seal the set in Mercer favor.

Set 4 (24-26) | Todd was the key in the Bears taking control of the fourth set, leading Mercer with three kills in its early 3-2 advantage. The Bears kept the lead for seven rallies before giving it up to the Bucs who were able to pull ahead by a margin as large as five-points (13-8). The Bears rallied back, including two kills from Alsten, to tie the match up at 21. Karle registered a kill to pull Mercer within one-point (24-23), but it would be the Bucs who registered an attack error forcing the two teams into extra points. Mercer dropped the final two points to errors, giving ETSU the fourth and final set, 26-24.

- ETSU recorded higher stats in all categories except in digs, where the team tied with 45 with Mercer.
- Roberta Todd led the Bears with a match-high 15 kills. The sophomore was just one dig shy from a double-double.
- Paige Alsten, Brittany Major and Annie Karle all reached double-digit kills, combining for 31 total.
- Maddie Nunley marked a double-double earning 45 assists and 11 digs. The setter also added four kills and one block solo.
- Amber Gibson marked 14 digs out of the team's total 56.
- Alexia Morey, Alsten and Major all recorded three blocks apiece.
- Megan Smith notched three out of the team's seven service aces to lead the Bears.
