Mercer Closes Regular Season with 3-0 Loss to ETSU

Bears swept in straight-sets by regular season champs
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Mercer fell 3-0 (22-25, 18-25, 16-25) to Southern Conference regular season champs, ETSU, on Saturday afternoon in Johnson City, Tenn. The teams' loss puts the Bears in fourth place in conference standings. Â

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (22-25) | Despite ETSU earning the opening set point, Brittany Major and Paige Alsten connected for three combined kills to give the Bears the advantage at 5-4. After a quick tie-up (5-5), Mercer held on to the lead for two more rallies before the Bucs connected on three-straight points to give them the lead for the remainder of the set. Â

Set 2 (18-25) | A Buc attack error and a Major killed allowed the Bears to take an early 2-0 lead. After six tie-ups, ETSU registered a 5-0 run to take the front for the remainder of the set. The Bucs extended their lead to as much as five-points (17-23) before sealing the set win, 25-18.

Set 3 (16-25) | Roberta Todd started set three registering her fifth kill for the Bears. After two tie-ups, Mercer produced three-straight points to take the lead 7-6. ETSU retaliated with a 9-2 run, reclaiming the lead at 15-9. Back-and-forth points were generated before the Bucs closed the final set with a 6-2 run.

Mercer will travel to Greensboro, N.C. to compete in the annual Southern Conference post-season tournament beginning on Friday, Nov. 16 and ending on Sunday, Nov. 18 with the Championship match. Â

NOTABLES
- Mercer moved to fourth place in the conference standings. The Bears close the regular season with a 15-12 overall record- the best record since joining the SoCon in 2014.
- The Bears also recorded their best conference season (8-8) since joining the league.
- Mercer has not had a winning season since 2015, when they went 15-14. The Black and Orange have not had a winning conference season since 2010, when they went 6-4.
- Roberta Todd led the Bears with a team-high 10 kills and falling one dig short of a double-double. The sophomore also contributed two total blocks and one assist.
- Paige Alsten connected on eight kills and one error on 15 attacks, averaging a .467 hitting percentage. The senior led with a team-high three total blocks.
- Maddie Nunley notched a team-high 30 assists. The sophomore also registered one kill and three digs.
- Brittany Major recorded her first career service ace, notching the lone ace in the match for the Bears.
